FalconView (#1) - NMEA Sentence (#272) - Message List
Good Afternnon
I am after some information on the NMEA sentences which FalconView requires to operate correctly and the consequences of not having these.
I have found a wiki posting that states VTG is required and then at least RMC, GGA or GLL. Preferrably all three.
I have a Garmin 155XL which my documentation tells me does not output VTG but seems to be working fine -in fact it has been in use for a number of years within my organisation. It does output GGA, RMC, GSA,GSV,RMB,BOD,WPL and PGRME.
I also have a GPS in another system with a ARINC 429 output only that does not include label 320(Magnetic Heading) so may not convert to VTG (via a 429 - RS 232 data converter. I have yet to find any definitive information on this subject as well.
Any assistance in this area would be much appreciated.

Here are the various fields from NMEA sentences that FalconView uses and the sentences that we read them from:
latitude (GGA, GLL, RMC) longitude (GGA, GLL, RMC) location invalid flag (GGA, RMC) satellites (GGA) altitude (GGA) time (GLL) speed in knots (RMC, VTG) speed in km/hr (VTG) true heading (RMC, VTG) date (RMC) mag heading (RMC, VTG)
I no longer remember why the documentation states that VTG is required. It doesn't look like from the above list or from your observations that this is true.

I too am now having issues with the PFPS 4.2 SP1 install with NMEA messages. We are using a third party program to simulate data coming over a serial or TCP to use the Moving map features. It ONLY puts ou the RMC message, and worked great with both serial and TCP connection in PFPS 3.3.1 SP5.
Now, the tool just comes up and sits on "Waiting for message". I have actually debugged the code in the third party program and PFPS IS connecting to the program in both serial and TCP but does not do anything with the data. Also we have tested this third party program with other GPS mapping programs and it works.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated
