FalconView (#1) - Loading ASTER GeoTIFF DEM (#457) - Message List
Hi, New user here.
I've been trying to load the ASTER GEOTIFF DEM data as an elevation map, but I can't figure out how to do it. So far I have only been able to load it as a normal Raster->GEOTIFF->"30meter (BW)" map.
I've tried to make a LIDAR directory under a VMAP directory and get FalconView to recheck the data using the map manager, but I still don't get the LIDAR map. However, skyview gives me the option to load its elevation data from the GEOTIFF 30 Meter BW.
I am using FalconView 4.2.1.1005

I would just like to add that skyview loads the GEOTIFF DEM, but it shows everything as white unless I get very close to the terrain, then it colors it green, yellow and red according to elevation.
I also had problems loading the WMS_Map_Installer utility, but after looking at the error log, it seemed that the fresh install is looking for "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\PFPS\data\WMS_MAPS\default.XML", where only a OpenStreetMap?.xml or WMS_MAPS_Default.xml (forgot what exactly) existed. Solved it by renaming the existing xml to default.xml.

It should go in the LIDAR directory under your map path (not under the VMAP directory).
So by default (in Window 7) you have a map path of: C:\Users\Public\Documents\XPlan
You should put the DEM in: C:\Users\Public\Documents\XPlan\LIDAR\
And do a data check on the path.

Tried putting the data in a LIDAR directory under the default map path (I'm in xp, so "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\PFPS\LIDAR\", still no joy. The data does not come up as an elevation nor as a goetiff map.

just to clarify, is there a naming convention or folder structure I have to follow (like in DTED files)? The full path to the DEM right now is "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\PFPS\LIDAR\ASTGTM_N14E121_dem.tif", but FalconView does not seem to recognize it. The data check log says "files: 0" for LIDAR

Finally solved my problem.
After monitoring file and network read/writes, I figured that FalconView was parsing all the files but wasn't recognizing them as GEOTIFF DEM's.
I did some more research on the ASTER files and found out that while they are GEOTIFF DEM's, they were of a different specification. Didn't delve much into it but it seems that the ASTER's were 16-bit, while normal ones are 24-bit. Got around the problem by using 3DEM to convert the data.
Thanks for the help.
Now, if only I could get FV to generate smooth contour lines using GEOTIFF's.:D

Could you, by any chance, be more explicit about how you solved the problem, that is, how did you convert your data using 3DEM? I am running into a similar issue with a dataset and it sounds like you may have found a common solution. I have opened my dataset in 3DEM, but don't see an option to change bit-depth or image format.
Thanks, in advance, for posting
