Notes on GeoTIFF files read by FalconView
GeoTIFF files must be GLOBALLY georeferenced and not just locally georefferenced. For instance, a file in the UTM projection that does not contain a reference to the zone (Projected CS Type key) cannot be placed on the Earth and cannot be used by FalconView.
Only Uncompressed, Packbits, and JPEG compression is supported.
UTM and State Plane files MUST contain the Projected_CS_Type geokey.
If the Image Description tag contains the string "MAP," the tag is checked for the string "1:" (as in "1:50000") followed by a number. FalconView will convert the number to a scale and use it when placing the image in a map scale bin.
Unmodified USGS DRG and DOQ files with original file names will be set in the proper FalconView bin and trimmed to the map neat line.
The map scale can be set in the "Edit Rect Data" dialog in GeoRect or by setting the Image Description tag in you application of choice.
This will cause FalconView to display the GeoTIFF at approximately full resolution (maps may be scanned at different resolutions which affects the scaling of the file). To get the file to display as you want it, you may have to "fudge" the specified scale.
The slightly dated profile of supported Tiff tags is available as an attachment on the GeoTIFF page.
