Digital Nautical Chart is a vector map derived from NOAA nautical data. FalconView can display it either as a base map (Background) or as an overlay for instance if you could display depth contours over some imagery.

DNC is a very verbose data format with many small files. NGA has created a web interface to download the data but you need to be sure that the files end up in the right place on your hard drive. The following steps should help:

  1. Go to the NGA DNC web page at  http://www.nga.mil/portal/site/dnc/
  2. Select the region from the map (in this example I chose region 17 for the Eastern US
  3. On the right hand side you need to select which "Library Catalogs" to download Select "ALL"
  4. You will be presented with a list of Libraries to grab. You must get the Browse library and you probably want to get all of the scales but you can leave out areas to make the download smaller. DNC is broken down as follows
    1. Browse smallest scale (Largest area)
    2. General
    3. Coastal
    4. Approach
    5. Harbor largest scale (Smallest Area)
  5. Once you select the libraries that you want (again make sure that the "Browse" is included) click download
  6. A new page with a link to a zip file is shown. Left Click the link and choose "Save" or "Download"
  7. Create A directory on your hard Drive and unzip the files to the directory. You can put multiple regions in the directory under separate names. The results should look something like:
     x:\my DNC Data\
       \DNC17
          \DHT
          \LAT
          \BROWSE
          \H1707350
          ...
       \DNC14
       ...

Note DNC has 1000s of tiny files (less than 4KB in size) so it is best to use a NTFS drive if you use lots of DNC data.

  1. Start FalconView and use the FalconView Map Data Manager (tools->Map Data Manager) to add the new path to FalconView by clicking the the "Add..." button on the "Paths" Tab in the dialog box. Adding a Path to DNC data 9.The name of the directory that holds the DNC17 directory not the DNC17 Directory itself. In the layout described above it would be the "x:\my DNC Data" directory. You should see a message stating "Map Data Found" in the "Browse for Data Folder" Dialog.
  2. Click "Add" then "OK" and FalconView will catalog the data.

You should now be able to see the data you downloaded either by choosing "Digital Nautical Chart" from the "Map" menu or from the "Overlay" menu
