Features of FalconView Open Source
This page contains a summary of the features of FalconView Open Source along with some screen captures that illustrate those features. FalconView includes a plugin architecture that makes it easy to add new features as well.
Base Map Types Supported
FalconView supports a handful of base map types including:
- GeoTIFF
- TIROS TopoBath
- Digital Terrain Elevation Data (DTED) / LIDAR
- Vector Product Format (VPF)
- CADRG
- MrSID
- Open Street Maps
Additional base map types may be added to FalconView by programmatic extension.
KML Support
FalconView Open Source can display KML and KMZ files. Network links, ground overlays, screen overlays and styles are fully supported. 3D models are not supported.

WMS Support
FalconView Open Source includes support for displaying images from WMS servers.
Shapefile Support
FalconView can display Shapefiles.
Drawings
The drawing utility allows users to draw custom georeferenced shapes in an overlay that can be saved and shared.
Analysis Tool
The analysis tool makes it easy to calculate distances and bearings between points on the map and to perform other analysis tasks such as calculating intervisibility between areas on the map (if elevation data is available).
Moving Map Tool
If appropriate GPS hardware is available, FalconView includes the ability to act as a "moving map."
ArcGIS Support
FalconView includes the ability to display and edit ArcMap .mxd files (requires ArcGIS Engine). The ArcGIS Editor also includes GUI access to any ArcGIS geoprocessing tools installed on the system. For more information on this capability, visit this link.
SkyView Mode
SkyView is a fast 3D map viewer implemented to allow pilots to "fly through" their proposed routes, observing charts and overlays as they rehearse their mission.
NITF Support
Elevation Data / Contour Lines
FalconView will display elevation data and can generate contour lines when such data is available.
Coordinate Grid / Coordinate Systems
FalconView supports various coordinate systems including Lat / Lon, UTM, Military Grid and GARS.
Open Street Maps
FalconView can draw Open Street Maps as a base map type.
Programmatic Extensibility
It is easy to extend the capabilities of FalconView by writing custom interactive map overlays in COM or .NET.
Government FalconView Features Omitted from FalconView Open Source
Because of certain intellectual property and export control issues, some features of FalconView that are included in the government release are omitted from the FalconView open source release. These features include the threat overlay, DAFIF overlays, the illumination overlay, and the route overlay. See our FeatureMatrix for more details. Commercial vendors or the general public are invited to create replacement overlays for these popular features. Georgia Tech may also be placed under contract for FalconView extensions or consulting.
